What Are Industrial Eyelets?

Industrial eyelets are small metal barrels that are inserted into holes in thin materials and typically have a line (rope, wire, etc.) running through them. This hardware prevents tearing and abrasion of the material into which they’re installed and protects the wire, cable, or other line. Generally compatible with textiles, sheet metal, wood, plastics, and composite materials, eyelets have one or both ends flanged to keep them in place after installation.

Applications for Industrial Eyelets

Eyelets are the perfect product for applications requiring hole reinforcement, structural integrity, or protection. Typical eyelet applications include:
  • Fabric Reinforcement – Strengthen holes for ropes, ties, or hooks.
  • Cable and Wire Management – Protect electrical cables or wires passing through sharp or rough edges.
  • Manufacturing – Serve as spacers or insulators to minimize vibrations or noise in machinery.
  • Aerospace – Enhances structural integrity in lightweight materials.
  • Automotive – Secures cables, wires, and interior components.
  • Packaging – Reinforces closures and ties in heavy-duty bags and pouches.

What’s the Difference Between Eyelets and Grommets?

Often interchanged, industrial eyelets and grommets are similar fastener products that are used to reinforce holes in various applications. Both components play a vital role in reinforcing materials, but their differences ensure that each serves specific needs effectively.

Eyelets

Industrial eyelets are smaller, simpler components that consist of a single piece of metal or plastic. Their primary use is to reinforce small holes, as a guiding mechanism for cords and laces, or for increasing aesthetic value. Additional industrial eyelet features include:
  • Smaller than grommets, eyelets consist of a single piece of metal or plastic.
  • Features a flared edge that grips the material and provides reinforcement.
  • Can be decorative or functional.

Grommets

Grommets are typically manufactured from metal, rubber, or plastic. They are used to reinforce holes, protect materials, and improve the functionality of various applications requiring durability and stability to prevent tearing, wear, or damage around holes. Additional grommet features include:
  • Two-piece components that consist of a ring and washer.
  • Provide more robust reinforcement for holes subjected to significant stress or abrasion.
  • Stronger and capable of withstanding high levels of stress and environmental factors.

How are Eyelets Installed?

Industrial eyelet installation is a straightforward process that requires the correct tools and techniques to ensure an accurate fit. Tools needed for proper installation include a hole punch or scissors, eyelet setter, hammer, or a hand or grommet press. Once your tools are secure, mark the location with a pencil or marker to where the eyelet will be located. Next, create the hole with your punch and ensure the hole matches the size of the eyelet barrel. Next, insert the eyelet through the hole from the front. Lastly, place the material with the eyelet onto the base of the eyelet setter and flatten the barrel using the setting tool.
